Caelan Doris Included in Irish Team While McCarthy Omitted
Returning head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy misses out.
Doris, who has not played since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to face New Zealand in Chicago on November 1.
Lock Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue he sustained during the first Lions Test against Australia in July.
Northern province forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are not included due to fitness concerns, and full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery following the summer tour.
Leinster prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".
Following facing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, Ireland host Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented Farrell, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to Australia.
In a mostly familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is remains up for grabs, as the two players poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC game at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting the province's Harry Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer Test victories over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced group of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the centres, though the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut during the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and Portugal.
McCarthy is the only fresh addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in Ireland A's loss by the English in Bristol earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a international appearance.
Southern province second row Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and veteran Ulster lock Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.
Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions matches over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain should the captain fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.
The national team will meet in Dublin on Monday before traveling to Chicago on Tuesday.
